A VISION OF SUBURBIA: A BOUNDARY PUSHING FASHION LAND
You might be perplexed but suburbia has long been a place for fashion experimentation and excess. If you have a look at the history of British subcultures and especially Modernists in the 1960s, you will discover that a lot of them came from satellite cities around London such as Woking and Croydon. More recently, a wave of Russian youngsters has embraced the ugliness of suburbia such as Alexander Groskey who photographs post-Soviet architectural landscapes or Gosha Rubchinskiy who updated the 1990s bad boy look. Behind the grey brick high-rises, the suburbs are the best reflection of today’s fashion – violent and rough, immense and uncanny. But also full of constant awe and dare. With her editorial Another is another, Celine Hong investigates the glamour British suburbia has to offer, exploring it through brick houses and empty playgrounds.
