THE NEW BALENCIAGA TOTE IS TAKING INSPIRATION FROM DISCOUNT CHIC
Demna Gvasalia, creative director of French Fashion house Balenciaga, is no stranger to controversy. Ever since he emerged with his already iconic label VETEMENTS a couple of years ago, he has been the fashion world’s hottest topic. Gvasalia is best known for not taking the industry as seriously as others. This attitude has garnered him plenty of attention, his key to success clearly being his talent for making everyday-objects such as the most basic clothing, accessory and footwear silhouettes desirable – just take a minute and think of that VETEMENTS DHL tee or Balenciaga’s Bazaar Bag.
Both of these bestsellers were inspired by objects that could’ve seemingly not been further away from High Fashion up until the designer placed them into the luxury-good context. And now he has done it again. His latest ode to discount chic is the brand new Balenciaga tote, the Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag, to be exact. Color, shape and size remind us heavily of IKEA’s famous FRAKTA Bag. The resemblance is uncanny:
Obviously, the two bags have nothing more in common than their appearance. Balenciaga’s spin on the giant blue tote is made of high quality glazed leather and is priced at 2.145 USD, whereas IKEA’s cult bag can be yours for less than a dollar.
